Where it started

Photograph of a sketchbook with an image and text collage by illustrator Mick Buston

February 2020 and Iā€™d made the decision that my chronic health conditions meant that I would not be able to become a professional photographer. I started to collect up all the books and magazines I had been keeping as reference for future shoots ready to put them in the recycling.

For some reason I decided to go through them all and select favourite spreads and photographs and tear them out. I started playing with the cuttings and gluing them into an old notebook I had. That was the beginning of daily sessions of maybe 10 minutes or so combining text and images or images only and collaging them together.

At the time, It was as much as way of keeping me occupied and give me some sort ot mental stimulation every day as I faced another shift both personally and professionally.
