Morelli’s colour pencil portrait
An early evening trip to Broadstairs with Sal and her mum so they could enjoy waffles and an ice-cream Sundae at Morelli’s in Broadstairs. Ice cream shop hold less interest for me now that I am keto but I could still enjoy a coffee.
Anyway, amongst all the people that came in and out whilst we were there, this person looked so suited to the vibe of Morelli’s - a cool classic Italian vibe somehow. Anyway, I grabbed a quick reference photo over Sal’s shoulder as I knew I wanted a go at drawing this.
Happy with the drawing but that confidence didn’t extend to using watercolour so grabbed my Polychromos pencils instead, been a while since I’ve used them so was a nice change.
From left to right, the stages of drawing and then adding subsequent layers of colour, slowly building up until I have a finished drawing I am happy with.
Really want to do more of these but there has to be a resonance in the subject so happy to wait until I see a perfect combination again of subject and place. This one worked I think because it felt like a cinema still I’d seen before, call it cliché or classic but it works.
