A peak inside my studio

A photograph of illustrator Mick Bustons desk space in his Margate studio

I am fortunate to be a part of Resort Studios in Margate located within the iconic Dreamland theme park. This is my third space here having had desk spaces previously. I now have my own studio with a door that is around 4 m x 2 m, perfect size for what I need.

It was originally a dirty grey white with blue scallops but we had some leftover Farrow and Ball Bone emulsion from home so it is now a much more calming space. I have a bookshelf for all my books, magazines, traditional materials like lino, paints, watercolours and general stationery as well as a stack of papers and sketchbooks. My desk houses my converted drawing board that my talented carpenter friend Greg from The House of Holmes converted to now hold my iPad. So much better than hunching over it on the desk. I have my basic test printer and paper here too and a pin board for those quick grab things I use more often such as pens, kitchen roll and keyboard / mouse.

To make it just that little bit more like a home from home space, I have a cute little Yamaha CD player and Sennheiser headphones and a sofa to crash on when energy levels run low. Of course most of the sofa is for Dolly to lay on when she’s in but she lets me share.

View from the doorway as you enter my studio. I like to decorate the space too with work from other people. Back left is an exhibiton poster from the Benjamin Senior exhibition at the Carl Freedman Gallery in 2023.
